Supervision
I have recently completed an Advanced Clinical Supervision course. This course includes online and telephone working as well as face-to-face. I have been certifieid as "fit to practice" (please see my badge below). This course is mapped to the supervision competences set by ACTO, the BACP and the NCS. The NCS have awarded the course Quality Checked status. With the changes in the counselling world, many counsellors are switching to delivering some or all of their services online, but there are relatively few supervisors qualified to support them. This course allows me to work in an online environment safely and ethically as well as in-person. This course acknowledges the phenomena raised in blended therapy and allows me to engage with supervision that parallels the type of therapy offered, eg, phone, email or online or in person. When you are counselling online, there are psychological processes that you need to be aware of, as well as a number of legal, ethical and practical considerations.
Ideally, at this stage, I would like to work with counsellors who are members of the BACP and working with UK based clients.
I have a passion for working with neurodiversity in my therapy room. I believe that neurodiverse therapists face a number of additional challenges in their work and would like to support you to navigate these. Having faced personal and professional challenges as a neurodiverse therapist, I am aware of the day-to-day challenges in my practice and the wider counselling world.
I have a nurturing nature and love to see people grow, having originally come from a HR/Training background. The relationship between the supervisor and therapist is important and you need to find the right fit. Not necessarily in the modality you use but certainly in terms of the supervisor's style. It is good to feel supported but also suitably challenged to allow you to grow.
However, at the heart of our relationship, is your relationship with your clients. I am there as a caretaker, to assist you to focus on their wellbeing. Keeping you on the straight and narrow regarding legal and ethical issues, as well as supporting you with technical issues but fundamentally facilitating you to increase your awareness of your impact on the therapeutic relationship with clients and provide experiential learning. Sometimes, this approach requires a directive style and other times a formative, restorative approach.
Supervision should be a place where you can come and discuss your fears, openly and honestly without judgement. A place where you feel empowered to take risks and through reflection and discussing different interventions, gain a fresh perspective.
